How the system works:
The building has 168 flat plate solar thermal collectors on the roof, which are capable of heating water to 90° C on sunny summer days. The heated water is stored in an 18,000-litre insulated storage tank and delivered to each suite under city water pressure, and with a small recirculation pump.
The primary function of the solar is to provide hot water to the suites. But in this hybrid system, the solar collectors also provide supplementary heat to the buildings heat pump loop system, which involves 330, 70-m deep boreholes, with vertical heat pumps in each suite.
